Where the tree becomes an art object

The miniaturized trees presented at the Frédéric Back Tree Pavilion are mostly native to North America. Some are your age and others are over 100 years old! You will recognize some familiar species like crabapple, fir, weeping willow, grey pine, sumac and even Virginia creeper. These trees – whose leaves and roots are trimmed to control their growth – display a variety of shapes. Some “flow” like a waterfall, while others reach for the sky and a few twist and turn. But they are all “larger than life” in the artistic emotions they evoke.
