An activity for remembering, learning and acting

The Jardin botanique’s Indigenous Peoples Garden invites you to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Montréal on September 30. Be part of this symbolic event that pays tribute to both the missing indigenous children and the survivors of residential schools.

Together let us honor Indigenous history, deepen our understanding of the past and strengthen our commitment to reconciliation.

Why wear orange on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation?

The colour orange comes from the story of Phyllis Webstad. On her first day at a residential school, she wore a brand-new orange shirt that she was very proud of—but it was taken from her upon arrival. Today, orange has become a symbol of what was taken from thousands of Indigenous children and a reminder that every child matters.

Observed across Canada, this day honours the children who never returned from residential schools and recognizes the resilience of those who survived. It is a call to remembrance, listening and solidarity with First Peoples.

Remembering a painful chapter in Indigenous history

September 30 recalls the time of year when Indigenous children were sent to residential schools. Between 1876 and 1996, about 150,000 children were taken from their families and placed in these institutions.

This separation was enforced under the Indian Act, part of a policy of assimilation led by the Catholic Church and the federal government. It aimed to suppress Indigenous languages, cultures and traditions in schools that were often overcrowded and underfunded.

Many Indigenous children never returned home, leaving deep scars in their families and communities—which are still felt today. This event at the Jardin botanique offers a meaningful opportunity to engage in a process of listening, learning and reconciliation.
